-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I won't be able to update this FAQ until April 4th (the Easter Day).
Whether this FAQ will be continued or not, that remains a question for now;
even I don't have the answer. So if you're desperate for this FAQ's
continuation, you'll have to wait until that day (April 6th will be fine).
Bring all my FAQ out of GameFAQs? Possibly. Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, I still welcome your mail regarding comments, questions, or
maybe some supports. I know there are many errors in this FAQ as well as
its weaknesses (doesn't contain ... or ... and .... blablabla...) so I'll
be happy to help you, whenever I am able to. Despite the fact that I didn't
reply all your mails, I actually READ ALL OF THEM. Believe it or not. So
feel free to mail me. If you insist on a reply then "Please reply" will do
just fine.

Of course there are some letters that don't deserve to be replied at any
cost. Below is one example:
_______________________________________________________________________

can youtelll me where can i find the last edition of weapon mags?
i can't find it everywhere. thanks
_______________________________________________________________________

What's wrong with the letter?
In Eastern tradition, writing such a mail is quite unpolite. But that's not
the big deal (I don't really mind about it); the main problem is because
I actually had mentioned it in my FAQ.
Well,I believe you understand my point.

*************** Q U I C K U P D A T E ****************

- Crytal Power told me that the first lyrics of 'Eyes on Me' should be
'I never sang my songs' and the third line should be 'I never said my
words'. Yes, it makes sense. I will confirm it as soon as possible but
meanwhile, I believe he's right.

- Seifer does have R1 trigger. I have received tons of mails saying this.

- About the specials FAQ: The name is TOKUSHU WAZA not Tokushugi or Tokugi.
Actually, I realized this when I play the remake version of FF VI, open the
menu and find 'tokushu' inside.
Besides, Rei Urabe had confirmed this too. Another credit for her.

- Things I don't know:
- Kame no Kouchi. Still wondering where they are.
- Not good in Card battle. Guess I have to play othello again, huh?
- What you should do at the room under the wooden bridge in Altimicia's
Castle (the one that looks like a basement. You can drain the water but
nothing happens??).
- No, I don't have a Pokesute right now.

- Things I already know (just to avoid some unnecessary mails) :
- The ingredients for your best weapons and where to find them.
- The requirements for acquiring all the G.F.s and that includes how
to beat the not-so-that-hard Ultima Weapon
- How to locate and beat Omega Weapon. Just don't ask me now.
- A database concerning G.F.s, Items, magic, Draw points, etc. But please
take a note: EVERYONE CAN DO IT if you know the language; just READ
THE TUTORIAL. End of discussion.
- Some cheap battle methods. Here's one of them:
Make your status attack junctioned with Sleep X 100, another character
with Stop X 100, and the third character Death X 100. Trust me, it works
60% of the time and can save your time a lot.
- The ultimate battle method:
Requirements: Squall's End of Heart learned (optional)
Quistis' Mighty Guard learned
At least 1 Aura spell
3 Eiyuu no Kusuri (Hero's Medicine)
Steps:
1. Cast Aura on Quistis.
2. Use her Mighty Guard. It casts Regen, Protesu, Shell, and Levitate
(and also Aura, but sometimes it doesn't work. Don't know why) at
once.
3. Use Hero's Medicine on three characters.
4. Voila! You'll have an invinsible party. Just attack the opponent
with your specials.
The downside:
If the Aura effects fade out too soon.

- Anything that has been covered by me, Yu Shenfu, Steven Bruck and Scott
Ong. You can find the info in each's FAQ.

Any comments? I guess not.

Last words...(just in case if there are no more updates) thanks for everyone
who have been supporting this walkthrough. Many, many thanks.

Sayonara,

Heero Yuy

P.S. One thing for sure: I'll be back on Seiken Densetsu IV: Legend of Mana.
But that's another story ... see you there!

| Author's note. This might help you to figure ------- Introduction |
| what this walkthrough will be. Think of it ------- How to Navigate |
| as the main page of a site. ------- Current Project |
|____________________________________________________________________________|
| | |
| | Hajimemashite. Welcome to the unofficial walkthrough |
| | of Final Fantasy VIII, written by me. I'm doing this |
| | because I want to challenge myself in writing skills. |
| | However, English is not my mother language; the fact |
| | leads to grammatical errors scattered among your way. |
| | --------------------- |
| INTRODUCTION | A more friendly format had been chosen to avoid these |
| ------------ | errors but some will remain, waiting someone to tell |
| | me where they are. |
| | --------------------- |
| | I'm not as good as Kao Megura, but I'll put my best in |
| | this walkthrough. If you have any questions, comments, |
| | or even critics, just send them to kanketsu@usa.net. |
| | Participants are welcome. See you there! |
|___________________|________________________________________________________|
| | |
| | This is not your typical FAQ. As a matter of fact, the |
| | format was based on common Japanese Guidebooks (like |
| HOW TO NAVIGATE | V-Jump FF VII guide, or Final Fantasy Complete Works |
| --------------- | by Digicube. Both can be found on your local Japanese |
| | bookstores) and maybe unfamiliar to you. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Guess what, it is simpler than you think. Basicly, the |
| | COMPLETE WALKTHROUGH is seperated into several "FAQ"s |
| | (I don't like the term anyway, but I believe it will |
| | represent my point). Some are independent, but all of |
| | them refer to this WALKTHROUGH. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Keep this in mind: You can get optimum advantage by |
| | using the parts simultaneously, but this depends on |
| | your reading intention. If you want simple hints and |
| Want some | want to find all the secrets for yourself, then this |
| details ? | walkthrough will perfectly suit you. On the other |
| | hand, FAQs on particular subjects (like item chart or |
| | special arts) might come in handy for the beginners, |
| | who don't have pride as much as old-school gamers (No |
| | offense!). |
| | ---------------------- |
| | The walkthrough itself is divided into two parts: |
| | - left side that contains the necessary steps, |
| | CHRONOLOGICAL order to avoid spoilers. |
| Left and Right | - right side that contains some game commments, but |
| | not details. |
| | Some notations are included in the right side, giving |
| | you directions to the related topics. |
| | ---------------------- |
| The (!) mark | An exclamation mark (!) means you are in a new scene. |
| | *)valids only in disc #3. |
| | ---------------------- |
| | I hope this note will help you. Feedbacks welcome. |
| | |

| | |
| CURRENT PROJECT | The format is somehow similar to an HTML page.... |
| --------------- | don't you think so? |
| | ---------------------- |
| | Well, I don't have a personal website and if I did, |
| HTML? | I don't have time to maintain it. Wonder if someone |
| | read this and have interest to convert it to HTML |
| | walkthrough..... |
| | And I believe it would be easier to read! |
| | ---------------------- |
| Unanswered | Thank you for sending me questions but recently I |
| E-mails... | don't have the time to answer all of them. |
| | ......sorry. |
| | ---------------------- |
| Sneaking | If you like to use some parts of this walkthrough |
| Guests... | (and the related topics) please tell me first. I |
| | realized that the info is not completely mine but |
| | at least I've done efforts in asking permissions |
| | to the rightful ones (and it wasn't too easy... |
| | trust me). Besides, does it harm you for sending |
| | an E-mail to notify me? Thank you. |
| | ----------------------- |
| Future Plans | - Full Japanese Fonts (need a run test, again). |
| | - Corrections on some parts of the flowchart. |
| | - Focused on particular subjects. |

| How to play. Basic means realy, really basic ------- Basic |

| Draw and Junction are the primary "systems" ------- Draw |
| in FF VIII. |
|____________________________________________________________________________|
| | |
| BASIC | Please refer to Yu Shenfu's basic FAQ on this subject. |
| ----- | He's doing some good works there. |
| | (I won't wasting my time on writing topics that had |
| | been covered by others while there are many other |
| | things to do. Well, maybe later. Meanwhile check the |
| | reference above). |
| | Or you might want to check Scott Ong's FAQ. He has |
| | some basics, too. |
| | ------------------------------- |
| JUNCTION | Junction is the main system in FF VIII. The term is |
| -------- | unfimiliar to English speakers, I know. Junction is |
| | actually the same as the old one: "Equip", differs |
| | only in the object. |
| | There are no equipping in FF VIII (even for weapons) |
| | since they have been replaced with "Junction". It |
| | allows you to "equip" magics to all of your parameters |
| | and increasing them. In certain cases, junction gives |
| | you some effects like status ailments immunity or |
| | else.... |
| | BTW, you need a GF before you do junction. |
| | -------------------------------- |
| DRAW | All magics are obtained by drawing from enemies or |
| ---- | draw points. You need to equip a GF with command |
| | ability "Draw" before drawing magics. |
| | *) Magics can also be obtained from items. More on |
| | this later. |

| | | Sex : Male |
| | | Blood Type : |
| | | Weapon : Gunblade |
| | | Special : Consecutive Blade |
| | | |
| | | Personality : |
| | | A lone wolf. Student of Balamb Garden and |
| | | about to graduate as a SeeD member IF he |
| | | pass the exam. His personality is really |
| | | something since he has an interesting |
| | | phylosophy that everyone are responsible for |
| | | their own business. "Everyone has to carry |
| | | his own burden." he says. |
| | | Why he's saying that? You'll find out later. |
| | | |
|--------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | | |
| | | _______________________Character Profile no.2 |
| She asks your advisor's | |
| name. | Name : Quistis Trepe |
| Default: Quistis. | Age : 18 |
| | | Sex : Female |
| | | Blood Type : |
| | | Weapon : Whip |
| | | Special : Blue Magic |
| | | |
| | | Personality : |
| | | Squall's advisor. Apparently, she is the |
| | | "onee-sama" (older women^^) in the game |
| | | although her age is the same as Squall's. As |
| | | a Garden teacher, Quistis is infamous among |
| | | her students...there is a "fan club" for her. |
| | | However, this affects her reputation and the |
| | | ethic commitee doesn't like a well (???) |
| | | relations between Quistis and her students... |
| | | Anyway, Quistis is a good teacher but seems |
| | | to caring too much for her students.... |
| | | especially Squall. |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | | |
| Quistis comes to visit. | |
| Leaving infirmary. | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| ! You can't run for now. | Apparently, you can't run all the time. Some |
| Keep walking. | time your move is limited only to walking, |
| | | especially when you're supposed not to run |
| | | in certain places (like the cafetaria.... |
| | | now that's manner). |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| ! FMV: Balamb Garden. | |
| | | |
| ! Classroom. Talk about | |
| the upcoming SeeD exam. | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Got control on Squall. | A good chance to familiarize your interface. |
| | | Notice that you're only have one command at |
| | | the battle menu: Attack. |
| | | *) Refer to basic. |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Check Squall's desk. | |
| | | |
| Access Balamb Garden | |
| Network. | |
| | | |
| ! Choose tutorial. | |
| | | |
| G.F. Quetzalcoatl | |
| acquired! | |
| | | |
| G.F. Shiva acquired! | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Check other options. | Balamb Garden Network doesn't have much, but |
| | | it can give you some amusing features. This |
| | | network is somehow similar to our real time |
| | | network and that means you can see the "chat" |
| | | (no, you can't submit anything but it's still |
| | | fun to "see" the student's conversation. |
| | | Later in the game, the network contains some |
| | | side story plot...sort of. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Leave the network. | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | | |
| ! Equip your G.F. | ___________________Main System no.1: Junction |
| | | |
| | | Now you'll have to learn about junction. |
| | | Basicly junction is the same as "equip" but |
| | | it can customize everything about your |
| | | characters. |
| | | |
| | | First, equip Squall a G.F. Now you can equip |
| | | some magics to your parameters. Which ones |
| | | you can equip to depends on the G.F.s ability.|
| | | For example: If Shiva has "strength junction" |
| | | and Squall is currently equipped with her, |
| | | then Squall will be able to junction some |
| | | magics into his attack power, making his |
| | | physical attack stronger. |
| | | |
| Optimize your settings. | After you equipped a G.F., you have an option |
| | | to optimize your settings. |
| | | Attack Magic Defense |
| | | Since you don't have any magics right now, |
| | | we'll skip the magic junction. |
| | | |
| Set up your battle menu. | Now about command abilities. These are the |
| | | ones you use in battles. At this point, you |
| | | only have Magic, Draw, and Item. Set them up |
| | | in your battle window. |
| | | |
| Party and menu ability. | Notice the lower box on the left? It's for |
| | | character or party abilities; you get two |
| | | vacant slots for equipping a G.F. (no, it's |
| | | not cumulative. Equipping ten G.F.s still |
| | | gives you two slots). Later in the game, |
| | | There are G.F.s which have ability that give |
| | | you three slots, and eventually four. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Go 1 screen to the right. | |
| | | |
| Talk to Quistis. | About the SeeD exam's requirements. Squall |
| | | has to accomplished a small task in Fire |
| | | Cave. |
| | | |
| Leave the class room. | |
| | | |
| ! Bump into a girl at the | |
| corridor. | |
| > Are you okay? | |
| > ..... | |
| | | |
| | | |
| Go 1 screen to the right. | |
| | | |
| ! Talk to the man on the | |
| bridge. | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | | |
| He gives you 7 cards. | _______________________Mini Game: Card Battle |
| | | |
| | | First cards you get. They aren't fancy enough |
| | | but it's better than nothing. |
| | | How we play it? |
| | | |
| | | As we already knew, there are many NPCs in |
| | | an RPG. Many give you informations, but most |
| | | of them do "nothing"... |
| | | |
| | | Square gives an important role to these |
| | | NPCs. If you talk to them by using the |
| | | [square] button, they will reply you with |
| | | a card battle. |
| | | |
| | | Aside from its role as a mini game, does card |
| | | battle give you something good? On in other |
| | | words: Is it worth enough to play? |
| | | The answer is YES. YOU HAVE TO PLAY IT. |
| | | |
| | | Quetzalcoatl ability "Card change" allows |
| | | you to change a card into items. Rare cards |
| | | yield rare items. Rare items are needed to |
| | | create best magics, best weapons, etc. |
| | | See my point. |
| | | |
| | | How to Play Card Battle |
| | | ---------------------- |
| | | |
| | | The game is like a cross between a usual card |
| | | game (forgot its name) and othello. |
| | | More on this later......meanwhile, check |
| | | Steven Bruck's Card FAQ. |
| | | |

| | |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| | |
| --------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| FIRE CAVE | The main goal is to get in, fight Efreet and |
| --------- | get out under a certain time limit (10,20,30, |
| | or 40 minutes). |
| | Your choice doesn't seem to make differences. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Did you take the G.F.s on | |
| Squall desk? | |
| Return if you forgot. | |
| | | |
| ! Talk to the guard at the | |

| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Choose your time limit. | Twenty minutes should be your standard, |
| | | I assume. It's not wise to choose 40 minutes |
| | | since you can visit this dungeon after you |
| | | defeat Efreet. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| ! Make your way to the | |
| center of the cave. | |
| | | |
| | | |
| ! Efreet shows up! | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| BOSS FIGHT: EFREET | Have one character junctioned with Quetzal- |

| | | (magic power). Then cast Burizado on Efreet. |
| | | Have another character cast Diamond Dust |
| | | (Shiva's attack). Efreet will go down soon. |
| | | |
| G.F. Efreet acquired! | |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Leave this dungeon. | |

| ! Laguna. Event. |
| Save Point. | W i n h i l l
| Draw Point:Kearuga |
| | |It's a quiet, peaceful little town (or so it
| | |seems) and make a good counterpart to the
| | |previous "assasination scenario".
| | |At this point, the town doesn't provide much
| | |to you. All the exploration still worths,
| | |though, since it can calm your heart...
| | |(but mainly because of the draw points! ^^)
| | |
| Go downstairs. |
| | |
| ! Talk to Eluone. | This is a touching event. Laguna says hi to
| | |Eluone's late parents (represented by pictures
| | |on the cabinet)tell them that Eluone will be
| | |a good girl today. You can tell that Laguna
| | |actually playing a counterpart personality to
| | |Squall.
| | |
| | |
| Go outside. |
| | |
| ! Draw Point:Despell. | Find the stairs at the bottom right of the

| Kiroth rejoins. |

| Go 1 screen down. | Go to Winhill's entrance. There are 2

| | |Rain simply reply her that Laguna is not
| | |"like that". He likes to go out and explore

| | | It consists of several identical floors,
| | | one of them has Kakutoh Oh no. 1. Don't

| | | Another important note about this place:
| | | NPC's in this place have interesting cards.

| You'd always be there in the corner
| Of this tiny little bar
|
| My last night here for you
| Same old songs, just once more
| My last night here with you?
| Maybe yes, maybe no
| I kind of liked it your way
| How you shyly placed your eyes on me
| Oh, did you ever know?
| That I had mine on you
|
| Darling, so there you are
| With that look on your face
| As if you're never hurt
| As if you're never down
| Shall I be the one for you
| Who pinches you softly but sure
| If frown is shown then
| I will know that you are no dreamer
|
| So let me come to you
| Close as I wanna be
| Close enough for me
| To feel your heart beating fast
| And stay there as I whisper
| How I loved your peaceful eyes on me
| Did you ever know
| That I had mine on you
|
| Darling, so share with me
| Your love if you have enough
| Your tears if you're holding back

| FINAL DUNGEON: | It deserves the "Final dungeon" predicate. |
| ALTIMICIA'S CASTLE | Well, doesn't mean anything when compared to |
| ---------------------- | Cleft of Dimensions in FF V (best final |
| | dungeon ever!) but it's still challenging. |
| | Altimicia's Castle is not that hard, but the |
| | "seals" made it so. Read on. |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| | |
| ! Eight abilities sealed. | You can equip Diabolos' "Encounter Nothing" |
| - Item | to avoid all the random battles and bust in |
| - Magic | to Altimicia's lair. But IMHO, it is insane. |
| - G.F. | There's no way you can stand against her by |
| - Draw | using a single [Attack] command. |
| - Command Ability | So here's what you have to do: locate all the |
| - Special Arts | seal's guardian and defeat them, one by one. |
| - Revive Ability | One down, one ability and there are eight of |
| - Save | them. |
| | | Be careful, unlock your most important ones. |
| | | Since I have abundant supply of "Aura", I |
| | | choose magic, and then special arts. |
| | | Yes, it's all about playing styles... |
| | | |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------- |
| Move two party "at once" | The excellent feature of FF VI is back! But |
| | | actually, you can beat most of this level by |
| | | using just one party; leaving the other as a |
| | | crouch. Still there are certain points where |
| | | you'll be forced to use both parties... |
| | | Is it just me or something, but don't you |
| | | think the level design is similar to Bio |
| | | Hazard? Never mind. |
| | | |
| -------------------------- - --------------------------------------------- |
| SEPARATION POINT |
| *) If you only have three good characters (or less), keep in mind that |
| there is a way to cover all the area in Altimicia Castle by one party. |
| |
| You'll find some glowing green circles. You can change party or change |
| the current party's character here. |
| |
| Hint: |
| 1 party : Gathered all your best characters. You will need them. |
| 2 parties : Separated into two teams. It will give you more fun. |
| Below is an example of a "balanced" party. |
| ------------------------------------------ |
| | |
| | |
| LEFT SIDE: MAIN PARTY | RIGHT SIDE: SECONDARY PARTY |

Not much to discussed here...

Gameshark? Not necessary.

I've heard that in Asia, the importers had succeed in created a "backed up"
copies of FF VIII. You can play it on a mod-chip equipped system without
gameshark codes. It is possible since the "check up points" in the game had
been removed. They are:
- The staff intro (the black and white slide show) in every disc.
- The instruction screen that tellsyou to change disc.
And this has been confirmed by Crystal Power (cryspower@hotmail.com). He
lives in Malaysia.

Seifer's Gunblade Trigger.

Someone told me that Seifer has the R1 feature as Squall. You need to push
the button slightly faster to do it. I'm not sure about this...maybe it's
just a plain rumor. I need some info here.
Well, I'm starting to received some responses but I haven't clarify it yet.
Please be patient.

- PSM online (www.psx.ign.com)and Gaming Intelligence Agency
(www.gaming-intelligence.com). Both has information on gameshark codes
that make you able to play the Japanese FF VIII on my PS. I'm sure that
others have it too, but I found the codes on the sites above.

- Edmund Chiu (edf91@worldnet.att.net)
For telling me how to put in Japanese fonts in a document.

- Sebastien Ruchet (ruchet@worldnet.net)
"Feel free to distribute this walkthrough, however in its current form."
I took some of the disclaimer from his Grandia FAQ. A very good FAQ!
I hope he will write again when Grandia 2 comes up... (and he will. He
told me! Can't wait to read it.)

- Matthew Emirzian (mtemichan@aol.com)
"This walkthrough (or any part of it) cannot be reproduced or altered
by any means without sole permission from the author. Any form of
plagiarism will be dealt with under full extent of the law."
Same as above. I took some of the disclaimer quotes from his Xenogears
secrets FAQ.

- James (_ravensong_@yahoo.com)
For telling me additional info about Diabolos and being supportive to me.

- Rei Urabe (rei_urabe.saitoh@nifty.ne.jp)
Special thanks for letting me put her works on this walkthrough. Remember,
the credits for the SeeD test answer (the exact answer) list and the G.F.
quick list all goes for her. And don't forget the "Eyes on Me" lyrics.
You should check her site at member.nifty.ne.jp/Rei/ff8/.

- Dennis Fan Chang (dfchang@uci.edu)
For being supportive on this work. Thank you for your offer to help; I'll
definitely need it pretty soon (since the chart is near completion right
now).

- Rolf (rcsw@ihug.co.nz)
For remind me where I can find the Pet magazine vol.1. He also told me to
put my e-mail address properly...I guess he's right. You can see it in
ver 0.1 but not in the 0.2, since the "first scene" is dominated with
the revision history things etc.
Bottom line: Thanks!

- Yu Shen Fu (ysf@pacific.net.sg)
We discussed the "specials" and finally came up with the specials. I have
to thank him for it. Thanks.

- Crystal Power (cryspower@hotmail.com)
For a confirmation on the miscellaneous gameshark.

- Veronica Ferrando (verofer@teleline.es)
She sent me a Card Battle Mini FAQ but I haven't got a chance to edit it
(since several parts of it are in Spanish) so I guess you'll have to wait
until the next update. However, thanks. I appreciate it.

- Yulius Leonard (leonard.yulius@mailcity.com)
For telling me how to get the Kakutou Oh vol.3, Thanks.
For telling me spoilers (about the ending), ... you don't have to tell me
about THAT.

- And all the supportive ones!

scattered along in this FAQ, technically or grammatically, but I might not
be able to located all of them by myself.

Of course, you'll get credit for it!
