Yikes! This especially sucks because the generic docks are a lot cheaper than the officially licensed Nintendo versions. Unfortunately, recent reports (story broken by Kotaku.com) have gamers claiming that after the latest Switch update, their consoles are getting bricked, with a couple of knock off brands in particular seeming to be the worst perpetrators.

The Nyko kit is giving users the most problems; it's $50, smaller than the Nintendo dock, and apparently, it can also destroy your console. Many users (mostly posting on https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/, the subreddit for the Nintendo Switch on Reddit.com) claimed that after the official firmware update 5.0 from Nintendo, their 3rd party dock bricked their consoles, despite the docks working perfectly up until the update.

It's not just the Nyko either. Users are reporting that docks like the FastSnail kit are also causing major problems. The problem with getting news from a source like Reddit, is that it is just people saying things. On the other hand, if enough people say the same thing, it stands to reason there could be some truth to it. In fact, Nintendo recently commented in response to Kotaku's report, and while it isn't a confirmation by any means, it is still interesting:

“Unlicensed products and accessories do not undergo Nintendo’s testing and evaluation process. They might not work at all with our game systems, and they could have compatibility problems with certain games, the Nintendo Switch system itself, and other licensed accessories and peripherals.”

In short, do your research, and if you can, buy official whenever possible. Saving $30 or $40 bucks is one thing, but losing $300 (bricked Switch) to save $40 doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
