The upcoming Venom movie from Sony has been slowly parceling out info, and so far, no one is especially thrilled with what we've got. So far, we have received a Venom-less trailer, then, after months of waiting, we got our first look at Venom... on a bottle of iced tea. Not exactly exciting stuff.
Plot info in general has been pretty scarce, with Carnage being rumored as the villain, but no real news beyond that; in fact, no one even knows if Carnage will be the villain in this film, since it is definitely possible they are just setting him up for the franchise. However, rumors have been swirling recently that Woody Harrelson, who has been attached to the project as a "henchman type character", will actually be Cletus Kassidy, half of the symbiotic murder machine known as Carnage. An inside source stated in "a very confirm-y way that not only is Carnage to appear in the upcoming Venom movie but, yes, he will be played by Woody Harrelson," despite earlier rumors suggestion that Riz Ahmed will be playing the psychotic villain. Riz Ahmed was earlier confirmed to be playing someone named Dr. Carlton Drake, a man with extensive knowledge of the symbiotes in the comics. .
The Venom film is said to be inspired by two comic storylines, Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. Lethal Protector has Venom making an uneasy truce with Spider-Man, leaving NY for San Francisco, where he begins his transition to anti-hero, protecting bums and citizens of SF from crime both human and metahuman, while Planet of the Symbiotes is a more far out tale, where an army of symbiotes invades earth, although the latter tale does involve Carnage. We'll have to wait and see how they blend these storylines.
Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson, and releases in theaters on October 5, 2018.
