HEX: Shard of Fate (Preview)

HEX: Shards of Fate is a free-to-play digital trading card game (TCG) from US developers HEX Entertainment in collaboration with German publisher Gameforge. It's designed for both veteran TCG players as well as those new to the genre who just don't see enough depth in the more well-known titles out there. With the recent expansion Frost Ring Arena, HEX now offers some engaging PvE content, giving beginners a chance to dive deeper into the game.

Not content with being a mere card game, HEX takes players to the world of Entrath, whose inhabitants have been locked in endless conflict ever since it was struck by the meteor HEX, the game's namesake. Players become a part of this world of adventure, jumping right into the action with their cards and their Champions.

HEX: Shards of Fate expands on the mechanics of popular trading card games by introducing several unique digital possibilities. The Tunneling feature, for example, buries a card in the ground, unlocking certain special effects, like the ability to get a peek at your opponent's hand. And the Enrage bonus on some cards is something crafty players can factor in to their strategy – cards with this feature increase in value with each turn, so with enough patience (and if your opponent gives you the chance), they can become powerful instruments of sudden death.

In general, a match against the computer plays about the same as a match against another player. The only real difference is that PvP matches have a timer so you don't have to wait forever for your opponent to make a move. The two players take turns drawing cards from their own decks, playing whichever ones they like, provided they have enough resource points. Alongside normal troop cards there are also quick actions and counterspells that can have a significant impact on the course of the game. Each round is made up of different phases where each player has a chance to act. So, for example, if one player wants to play a powerful troop card, their opponent will get a chance to see it before they make their own move by playing a counter, if they have one in their hand.

In addition to some pretty impressive gameplay in its PvE and PvP matches, players can find a good deal of depth in the HEX meta-game. The cards and the Champions fit in perfectly with the lore of Entrath, and tell their own unique story. Various creatures, troops, and spells are affiliated with different races, classes, and factions, but at the same time they all mix together really well. When compared with other games in the genre, HEX offers  a positively endless number of ways to arrange your deck, yet it never gets too overhelming.

If you want to play a deck well, you first have to think about what kind of Shards you want to base it on. Shards  are gems divided into different categories, and serve as the resource system used in HEX. Each time you play a resource card – regardless of the sub-category – your Champion receives at least one charge point. Most cards not only require a certain charge, but also a minimum number of certain-colored gems. Use them right, and nothing will stand in the way of your unholy alliance of Dwarves and undead Necrotics, or your brave coalition of Humans and Orcs.

Right after you start the game, you select your cards from a starter deck and choose one of the eight available races. Then, in the Starter Trials, you get an additional booster pack along with several other cards to play. But even if all you have is this beginner's deck, you can still do pretty well in PvP matches, and also enjoy the full extent of the Frost Ring Arena.

In the Arena, you can win Gold or various items like rare PvE cards. Gold is something you're going to need if you want to expand your deck without having to spend real money. And this is another area where HEX sticks out from the rest of the pack – it's a true TCG, with an emphasis on the "T", for trading. Players can purchase cards in-game using the premium currency, but they can also sell cards – say, duplicates, or units they never use – for Gold as well as for premium currency in the game's auction house. Even in the game's current Beta version, it's already apparent that the social aspect of this trading system, which helps strengthen the player community, is going to be one of the game's major distinguishing features. It really shows you what direction they're headed in for the final version – a true MMO/TCG, just like mastermind Cory Jones promised in the Kickstarter campaign.

In addition to the Frost Ring Arena, the tutorial, and direct PvP matches, once you manage to build a pretty strong deck, you can participate in a tournament. As with other TCGs, this allows many different players to complete against each in a series of rounds in order to find out which one of them is the best.

HEX's strong PvP aspect is something Gameforge recently promoted at the IEM tournament in Katowicze, Poland. The German F2P publisher announced a worldwide tournament later this year with a prize of $100,000 (USD) awarded to the winner. They haven't released most of the actual details yet, but TCG players and fantasy fans should probably start practicing in HEX: Shards of Fate today if they plan on winning.

Summary

If you like playing Hearthstone, but you'd like a bit more depth; or if you like physical card games, HEX: Shards of Fate is just what you're looking for. If you're new to the world of TCGs, the Frost Ring Arena offers a real chance to familiarize yourself with the material. The developers plan to gradually keep adding new content, and if they keep their standards as high as they have been, HEX is on its way to becoming some serious competition for the more established brands. If you want to try it out for yourself, it's a free-to-play title, so head on over to hextcg.com to download the client. We at DLH are certainly looking forward to future patch updates and card sets.
