-- II. Foreword / Contact Information --
First, this is not a gameplay FAQ. This is a complete list of all of the
techniques every player in Blitzball may learn through Techcopy, and tips on
how to Techcopy them successfully. If you need help figuring out the Sphere
Grid system, or want a walkthough, look elsewhere. Nearly all of this
information was obtained by playing ungodly amounts of Blitzball, enough to
drive a sane person crazy (good thing I already was, yeah?), then going to
each player individually throughout Spira, and "scouting" them with the [square]
button, to see which techniques they could learn. However, the asterisked
parts about Key Ability lockouts are taken from the Japanese Final Fantasy X
Ultimania Scenario book. I *heart* Digicube / Studio Bentstuff.

hate to be strict like this, but I currently recieve between 20-40 letters per
day about Final Fantasy X, most of which are from people who didn't read a FAQ
well enough. I have a full-time job, a part-time job, and a social life, and I
simply don't have time to answer every email. I wish I did. I've done my best
to make this document as complete and self-explanatory as possible, so please
respect that, and don't ask me to regurgitate material from it. The latest
version of this FAQ, and all the other ones I've written, can always be found

-- III. Japanese <--> English Technique Conversions --
This section is for people who have the import - like myself - and are
wondering what to make of all of the name changes. The left column is the
technique name in the Japanese release, and the right column is its English
equivalent in this FAQ. It is assumed that you know hiragana and katakana,
and more importantly how the latter phonetically spells out foreign words -
I'm not writing "Uizaa" instead of "Wither", and "Benomu" instead of "Venom".
If you're not playing the import, nor curious about how techniques were

certain techniques, you'll see one to three asterisks (*). This denotes that
you need to have learned a certain number of Key Abilities before you may
Techcopy this technique. One asterisk means you must learn at least one of
that player's Key Abilities to Techcopy, two asterisks means you must learn
at least two of that player's Key Abilities to Techcopy, and three asterisks
means you must learn all of that player's Key Abilities to Techcopy. Zero
asterisks next to a technique means you don't need to have learned any Key
Abilities to Techcopy. Finally, out of further consideration for importers,
I've listed the Japanese name next to the English name. The Japanese names

-- VII. Frequently Asked Questions --
1. How do I recruit other players?
Very simple - walk up to any recruitable player and press the [square]
button. Depending on your Scout Level, you'll see less or more information
about them, such as their statistics, Key Abilities, and Techniques they
know or may learn.
2. Why is it important to Techcopy?
As indicated in the preceeding sections, your players are not able to learn
all of the techniques that they rightfully should, until they've Techcopied
at least one of their Key Abilities. Besides that reason, it's common sense
that the more techniques your team knows, the more effective a team you
will be. High stats will only take you so far in the game - a wide body of
techniques is essential for a winning team.
3. How can I successfully Techcopy?
When Techcopy flashes on the screen, you'll notice it does so in blue and
white. You can ONLY press [X] to Techcopy when it's flashing white, however,
different techniques have different timing, so even if you press [X] when
Techcopy is white, you still may not learn the technique. Being at an equal
or higher level than the player you're trying to Techcopy from is also very
important. A level 13 player will have a lot more trouble Techcopying from
a level 50 player, than a level 52 player would have, for example.
Two techniques with absolutely brutal timing are Sphere Shot and Invisible
Shot - Sphere Shot may only be successfully copied right before the player's
foot connects with the ball, and likewise, Invisible Shot may only be copied
right as the player is releasing the ball after their dervish whirl.
4. How can I Techcopy Anti techniques?
Passes and tackles are simple enough to learn, but if you're trying to learn
a certain "Anti" ability, such as Anti Wither or Anti Drain, equip several of
your players with the appropriate Tackle or Pass techniques, and repeatedly
get into encounters with the player you're trying to Techcopy from. For
example, if you were trying to learn Anti Venom 2 from Linna, you would equip
several of your players with Venom Pass and/or Venom Tackle, and encounter
Linna, passing and tackling until you're able to Techcopy it.
5. How can I Techcopy Volley Shot? No one ever uses it!
Volley Shot is only used when someone equipped with it is near the
opposition's goal, and the ball is fumbled. It is an automatic reflex, and
cannot be selected for use like techniques like Sphere Shot or Nap Shot.
For example, if you fumble a pass and the ball bounces off the bottom of the
Sphere Pool near someone with Volley Shot, the player equipped with it will
automatically use Volley Shot in an attempt to make a goal. Likewise, if you
make a failed shot and it bounces off the goalie's hand, if a player nearby
is equipped with Volley Shot, they will use it. If you want your goalie to
fumble catches more often, do not equip them with Grip Gloves.
6. How can I Techcopy techniques like Regen, Golden Arm, Pile Venom, etc?
You can't. Jecht Shot 2, Elite Defense, Brawler, Pile Venom, Pile Wither,
Regen, Good Morning!, Hi Risk, Golden Arm, Gamble, and Aurochs Spirit are
random prizes in the Blitzball League and Tournament games. Note that all
of these techniques may require your players to have learned one or more of
their Key Abilities to equip. If a particular player has not learned the
nescessary number of Key Abilities, and you try to give them one of these
techniques anyway, you will be unsuccessful, and automatically forfeit the
prize. In the case of Jecht Shot 2 and Aurochs Spirit, Tidus and Wakka
(respectively) MUST know all of their Key Abilities before they can learn
these.

[square] button, it says he's a "Blitz Fan Level 1", and that his favorite
team are the Kilika Beasts. Has anyone found a purpose for this, or other
"Blitzball Fans" in Spira?
* If you play lots of Blitzball early in the game, the CPU will begin
recruiting players you don't have access to until very late in the game,
such as Nimrook, Brother, or Durren. This is good, because these players
level up along with yours, allowing you to recruit them later without
trouble, but sometimes the CPU won't _ever_ recruit a particular player,
even very late in the storyline, after 200+ Blitzball games. This is bad,
because it's difficult to sign up a level 1 player and level them up when
everyone else is level 60+. If anyone knows a way around this, or how to
coerce the CPU into recruiting a player, PLEASE let me know! :)
