1. INTRODUCTION
---------------
Baseball Stars is an often overlooked baseball game which was released in 1989 by SNK.
BBS combines cartoon-type gameplay with real baseball-type player management.
This game established much for future baseball games. I also want to remind you that
BBS is one of the only baseball games I actually enjoy. This FAQ will tell you how to
play the game.

2. FAQ
------
On the title screen, press start and you will have access to...
THE MAIN MENU
-------------
After pressing the Start Button on the title screen, the main menu appears on the screen.
Here is a list of the options you can choose and what they do (not all the commands are
available until you create a team):
LEAGUE PLAY - This allows you to play a tournament with your friends. The tournament stats
are saved by battery. When you choose this option, it will say "2 Teams, 3 Games." Using
the Up and Down keys on the d-pad, you can choose between "Teams" and "Games". Using the
Left and Right keys on the d-pad, you can choose the amount you want. When you press A,
you will get to choose the teams you want. By pressing Up and Down, you can choose whether
you want the computer to control the team, or if you want a human player to control the team.
After choosing the teams, it will ask you if the arrangements you made. Choose "Keep". You
are now ready to start playing. When you press A again, you will appear back on the main
menu. Choose "League Play" again. The menu will now look different. If you want to see the
standings of the teams, choose "See Standings". If you want to start a new league, choose
"New League". Please note that if you start a new league, the old one will be erased. Select
"Continue Play" to start playing. Using the d-pad, choose the game you wish to play (you
should be able to figure out the chart). When you select the game, you will begin a normal
game (see "PLAYING THE GAME"). If you have two computer teams playing, it will ask if you want
to watch the game. If you select "Yes", you will watch the computer play through the whole
game. If you select "No" it will skip the game and go straight to the end of the game.
TRADE PLAYER - When you make a team, you can trade players by using this option. After
selecting this option, it will list the teams created with the "Make Team" option. Use
Up and Down on the d-pad to cycle through until the two arrows point to the two teams you
wish to trade players with. Then press A to confirm one team and Select to confirm the
other. A list of players from the first team will appear. Select the player you want
to trade and press A. The list of players on the second team will appear. Choose the
the player you want to trade and press Select. Another screen will appear asking you
to confirm your decision. Select "Yes" if you want to make the trade, select "No" if
you don't.
VIEW TEAM - Allows you to view the stats of the players on the different teams. When choosing
this option, you will see the teams - both the real teams and the created teams. Choose a
team and you will see a list of players on the team. By selecting a player, you can see
their stats. If you select a team that you created, you may decide to change the names
of some of your players. To do this, select your created team and choose the player you
want to change their name. Press Left or Right on the d-pad until it says "CHANGE NAME".
Press A and you will be on a screen similar to the one you were on when you gave your team
a name. Using Left and Right on the d-pad, cycle through the letters to create a name.
When you are finished, select "END". Your player's name will not be changed. You can also
Power Up your player if you have enough money. Press Left or Right on the d-pad until you
get the option to "POWER UP". Press A and you will get a message whether you want to buy
points to power up. Choose "BUY" or "PASS" depending on what you want to do. If you choose
"PASS" you will cancel the command. If you choose "BUY", the cursor will move to the stats.
By pressing Up and Down on the d-pad, you may move up and down between stats. By pressing
Left and Right, you can change the player's stats by using your power points. Press A when
you are finished and the cursor will move to the top of the screen where it was to begin
with. Press B three times to return to the main menu.
REMOVE TEAM - This lets you delete a team which you previously made. When you choose this
option, you will see a list of teams you created. Select the team and press A to move
to the next screen. This screen will give you a warning as to whether you want to remove
this team or not. Decide whether you want to or not, and select "Yes" if you choose to
or "No" if you don't.
END PLAY - This is basically a warning message for when turning the game off (see "Things
you should know). You have to reset the NES if you want to keep playing (there's no way
to get out of this....I think).
V S - This is basically the main game. After selecting this option, you have three options.
The first option is a one-player game. The second option is a two-player game. The last
option lets you watch the computer play a game (this is if you are really bored). After
you select what you want to do, you will appear on the select team screen. Select the team(s)
you want and press A. You will now begin a normal game (see "PLAYING THE GAME").
HIRE PLAYER - If you have enough money and enough empty room on your created team, you
can choose to hire a player. When you choose this option, you will be on a menu of
created teams. Select the team you wish to hire the player on. If the team has too many
players on it, you must fire a player to make room (see "FIRE PLAYER" below). After
selecting the team, you will see three things. Using the Up and Down on the d-pad, you
can change where the cursor is and, using Left and Right on the d-pad, you can change the
type of player you want (this is hard to explain, you'll get the hang of it.) You can also
choose whether you want you player to be male or female. Press Down on the d-pad until
you see the word "MALE" appear on the list. By pressing Left or Right on the d-pad, you
will be able to change it from "MALE" to "FEMALE". Press A when you are done making your
selections. You will now be on a person's stats screen. Press Right and you will have
the option of signing the contract or seeing the next person. Keep choosing "NEXT" until
you see the character you want. After choosing "SIGN CONTRACT", you will now have to power
up your player. See "VIEW TEAM" above to show how this is done.
MAKE TEAM - With this option, you can created any kind of team you want. When you choose
this option, you will get a list of different types of teams. After choosing what type
of team you want, you can now name your team. Using Left and Right on the d-pad, you can
cycle through the letters. When you are done, choose "END". Now, using the d-pad, choose
you team's logo. Press A when you made a choice. The final screen asks if you are sure
this is what you want. Choose "Yes" if you are sure, press, "No" to make your team again.
FIRE PLAYER - Perhaps the saddest option in the game - this option lets you get rid of
a player on the team to created room for hiring a new player. After selecting this
option, you will see the list of created teams. Select the team the player you want
to fire is on and press A. You will now be on the list of players on the team. Choose
the player you wish to fire, then press A again. You will see the stats of the player.
If you wish to fire the player, choose "FIRE", but if you changed your mind and wish to
keep your player, choose "KEEP". If you do decide to fire your player, there is no way
to get him/her back. You must hire a new player instead.
If you selected "LEAGUE PLAY" or "V S", you can now player the game. First, read how
to set up these two options above, then, you'll want to start.....
PLAYING THE GAME
----------------
CHOOSING YOUR CHARACTERS - Before the game begins, you can press Left and Right on the d-pad
to choose different options. These options are pretty self-explanatory, so I'm not going to
say how to do them (you shouldn't have any problems). When you are done preparing for the
game, press Left or Right until you see "START GAME". Press A, and the next team will get
to prepare for the game (if the team is a computer, the computer will prepare the teams.)
Press A or wait for the computer and you will start the game.
PLAYBALL!!! - I am assuming you know how the game of baseball is played....anyway, BBS isn't
that hard to learn, so I won't go into detail on what to do. Here are the controls:
BASIC CONTROLS: In baseball stars, the D-pad is equivalent to the bases. For example, if
you wish to throw the ball to second base, you will press Up and A. Here is a chart that
might help you better understand:
The D-Pad: The Baseball Diamond:
U 2
L R 3 1
D H
CONTROLS FOR BATTING:
The D-pad: You can move your player in all four directions in the box so you can get a clear
aim at the ball.
B Button: While pressing B and a button on the d-pad, you can attempt to steal a base.
A Button: Swings your bat.
SELECT Button: This is not used for batting.
START Button: Pauses the game but ONLY if the other team hasn't pitched (if the ball is
coming toward you, you will not be able to pause.) If you press A while the game is
paused, you will have a list of options you can use to customize the game.
When you hit the ball, the view will change to overhead and your character will run to first
base. By pressing B or A and a direction on the d-pad, you can run to a certain base, but be
careful, you don't want to get out!
NOTE: It is possible to get hit by the ball. You will automatically go to first base if this
happens.
After you get three outs, you will be in the outfield and ready to pitch.
CONTROLS FOR PITCHING:
The D-Pad: You can press Left or Right to move the pitcher around.
B Button: As long as there is one person on the base, the B button will change to the overhead
view and from there, you can make your move. (This is incase one of the players is stealing
a base, see CONTROLS FOR INFIELD/OUTFIELD below to find out how to control your character).
A Button: Pitches the ball - Press Left or Right to control which way the ball goes, and press
Up and Down to control the speed of the ball.
SELECT Button: This is not used for pitching.
START Button: Pauses the game. If you press A while the game is paused, you will have a list
of options you can use to customize the game.
When the other team hits the ball, you will be in control of the outfielders.
CONTROLS FOR INFIELD/OUTFIELD:
A Button: Throw the ball - use a direction key to control where you want the ball to go.
B Button: Runs to a base - use a direction key to control where you want the player to run.
SELECT Button: This is not used.
START Button: This is not used - you must wait until the play is over before you can pause.
That is basically how to play the game. I wasn't too detailed with this because it's easy
to learn and isn't too hard to play. After you play through all nine innings (or more), you
will be at the....
END OF THE GAME
---------------
Here, you will see the stats of the game. You will also earn money for your team which can be
used hire new players, or buy power points for you players (see above).

3. SECRETS
----------
Creating a power-up team
------------------------
This is a great code which will save you a lot of time powering up your team: On the team select
screen (in the make team option), press DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, DOWN, RIGHT, and UP on the d-pad.
Press A and you will appear on the team name screen. It will say "When isn't it?" change it to
"When it is." If you did the trick correctly, you will have an extremely power team.
Creating a power-up women's team
--------------------------------
This is the same code as the on above, but this time, you have to press DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN,
DOWN, RIGHT, UP, UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN, and UP. Change the message the same way, and now, you
will have a power-up women's team.
Here is an addition (or correction) to this trick which was sent to me by Spunkmaster Sean:
"After you use the code for a female team, the game gives you TWO questions. The first is "What
is a wren?" The correct response is "A bird." Then it will follow with the "When isn't it?" question."
Creating a regular team with all girls
--------------------------------------
I recieved an e-mail from hq99 telling me how to make a regular team with all girls:
"Go to Make Team: Then press Down x 5 then Right x 7 (You should land on Power Hitters) and press
the A button. On the team Name the team screen, The team name will be a question: WHAT IS A WREN?
Change it to A BIRD. Make sure there is a period after bird. Change the team name to whatever
you want, and pick a logo, and thats all."
Thank you hq99 and Spunkmaster Sean for sending me these secrets!

4. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
-------------------------
This game uses a battery to save the data. If you read the "END PLAY" message, it tells you to
hold reset while turning the power off. If you do this, you will have a better chance at keeping
your saved data. Even though this has a better change, the game is still old and it may not
save correctly. This calls for you to change the battery (I have never tried this, so don't ask
me) inside the cartridge.

5. FINAL NOTES
--------------
I know I was a bit lazy on the instructions for playing the game, but this game is very easy to
learn and shouldn't be too much trouble to figure out. If you find an error, find something
new, or need help with the game, e-mail me and I will get back to you. You'll get credit for
finding something new (I'll post your name, if it is okay with you).
