When Taito released this game in 1996, it was actually one of the
better wrestling games on the market. Everyone else was going 3-D and
doing a lousy job of it, so Taito stuck with the tried and true 2-D
formula that had been working well for Human in their Fire Pro series.
And before Fire Pro Wrestling G was released, this was probably the best
wrestling game on the Playstation.
The game features some 34 characters, all based on actual wrestlers,
but much like Fire Pro, the names were changed so Taito didn't have to
pay any licensing fees. Each character has more than 48 moves PLUS
moves to the outside, tandem tag team moves and reversals!
Quite advanced for it's time, Champion Wrestler was one of few PSX
games that took advantage of the 4-player adapter allowing up to 4 player
battle royals and tag matches. For a wrestling game, Chapion Wrestler is
very challenging and has no "easy" setting (much like Fire Pro), so don't
be discouraged early on.

There are initially 34 characters to choose from and ??? hidden
wrestler freed up upon beating the Title mode. All characters
are based on real wrestlers, but have been given false names because
Taito didn't pay for a license. I chose to list the characters using
the real wrestler names because I can't read Japanese. Switch between
characters with up and down (right & left to choose between 15

Training mode allows you to adjust to the move system without having
to worry about tarnishing your record. There is no crowd and no announcer,
but the game does give tips (in Japanese) on what move options you have in
different situations. However, even though the words are in Japanese, the
game does show you which buttons are available. An exclamation point (!)
appears above the head of each player when they can perform a move. This
will teach you when to hit the buttons and when reversals are possible.
Unfortunately, your opponent isn't any less aggressive in training
mode than in a regular match.

3) GAME PLAY

The grapple system is very similar to Fire Pro G in that you have to press
the buttons for a move just after the two wrestlers lean back, in the brief pause
before the wrestlers lock up. To tie up, you need only move into your opponent.
Pounding the buttons like mad is a sure way to lose the match quickly.
Strong moves like suplexes and piledrivers will be blocked early on in the
match. Also, late in the match, if you just try to punish your opponent with
repeated suplexes or power moves, he will start to reverse them.
While the dives to the outside are nice to look at, your opponent is rarely
far enough from the ring to be hit by them. More often than not, you'll go
sailing over his head and be at his mercy.
Use the ring ropes to your advantage. If you hit a move on an opponent too
close to the ropes, they'll usually bounce off of them and land on their face.
Champion Wrestler is the first game I've ever seen to include reactions with the
ring ropes into the match in a realistic manner.
