Strider Hiryu 2, Strider 2, and all other related names/trademarks are

Entertainment Inc.
This is a guide for the Japanese Playstation and Arcade version of Strider
Hiryu 2. The guide is not a walkthrough, it covers the hidden score bonuses you
will sometimes find by slashing with the sword at certain 'hotspots' of a level
to make an icon appear to collect. You may think its rather pointless to get
these score bonuses but if you look at the scoring results at the end of each
stage you will see an 'items found' bonus. The more of the hidden bonuses you
have obtained the higher your 'items found' bonus will be (although this has to
be verified). Also it helps with your ranking/grade mark you get at the end of
each stage. This guide should be helpful for all those perfectionists and score
junkies out there and also it is fun to look for them:)The actual game is a
great straightforward in-your-face non stop ride through lots of action which
kind of reminded me of Super Contra on the SNES years back. I was a little
disappointed that they didn't bring back the robotic monkey boss from Strider 1
though (beginning of stage 2). They bought back every other boss in some form
or another. Instead they replaced him/it with a big Woolly Mammoth thing. Oh
well, can't have everything. The only real problem with Strider 2 is its
infinite continues, which allows you to complete the game in your first
sitting! Therefore the game seems suitable to get a high score on (by using no
continues or limiting yourself to about 5) and perfecting your strategies
rather than getting to the end every time by simply hacking and slashing. Trust
me its much more fun this way and it will last you longer!
PLEASE NOTE - This guide is far from finished. It covers mainly the Sony
Playstation version, although it can be used for the Arcade as far as I know
(but not for Mission 00 as that is a Playstation specific). I have not
uncovered every hidden bonus on any missions yet (though I'm getting close with
MISSION 01). If you know of any hidden bonuses that I may have missed please
E-mail me at mo9abc@yahoo.com and I will verify and add them in the next
update. With your help this guide should eventually cover every hidden score
bonus in the game! Also could you be specific as to where the secrets are as
that would help a lot when verifying them. Since this is my first ever FAQ any
feedback would be greatly appreciated (such as layout, etc). Also if I am being
too vague with the bonuses please tell me and I'll try and be more specific.
Although I have tried to be as detailed as possible.

5. HINTS ON GETTING HIDDEN BONUSES AND SCORE
-----------------------------------------------------------
1. Most Secrets can be obtained by slashing with your sword at certain places
in a level. There are subtle clues throughout a level as where to do this (such
as a small crevice or simply climbing down a gap instead of jumping across it).
However, not all hidden bonuses are obtained in this kind of way. Certain
requirements have to be met with a number of them to make them appear.
1. For some secrets it helps to have the powerups for your sword (Remember If
you get hit even once in any way then you lose the all the powerups you got).
With the powerup, you can reach out further when slashing. Some secrets maybe
can only be gotten with the powerup? (Although I have not come across any like
this yet but it definitely does help to have it).
2. Quite a few secrets are in big open spaces in the air. Getting these can
sometimes be tricky (after all, they are invisible before firing at them). In
these cases I have used the scenery graphics to help describe where and how to
get them (such as standing on top of writing that's painted onto a road). Of
course you may be able to get some of the same secrets in different ways (such
as doing a running double jump and firing from a place rather than a standing
double jump and firing)
3. Once uncovered, a secret doesn't disappear. It stays there until collected
(even if you fall down a hole or use a continue). Sometimes you may have
uncovered a secret after doing a running double jump while slashing and the
screen moves down so fast that it makes you think you uncovered it but missed
it. Don't worry it won't disappear so you can go back to check. If its not
there after doing that running double jump again, the chances are that may have
already got it the first time around (just that the screen moves down fast when
falling and you did not see yourself get it).
4. If you missed a secret in a scene and want to get it later on in the same
scene - DON'T!! If you go several screens forward, you will find that you
cannot come back - the screen won't scroll all the way back again!
5. To speed up cut scenes (such as boss intros), press the triangle button on
the pad. For some reason this won't work for the first second or two of the
cut-scenes. The cut-scenes should speed up by about X2 afterwards. This may be
useful if you are trying to get a better time bonus at the end of each mission.
Although I'm not sure if the cut scenes are included within the internal timer
the game keeps track of. Of course if you set the timer to that infinity sign,
then you won't get a time bonus at the end anyway. Also to skip those multiple
picture patterns that appear just before the next scene loads, press the START
button.
6. I've noticed that some hidden bonuses change sometimes. I think this comes
down to the mission order you choose. For example, if you complete Mission 02
before Mission 01 then secret 01.03.05 will be different. Can anyone confirm
other secrets that change? Because of this, my guide goes in the normal order
from Missions 01-06. Mission 00 will not be covered yet, simply because I have
yet to unlock it by completing Strider 1. I've also heard it's a difficult
mission so its not a good way to start the game with anyway.
7. To increase your ranking considerably don't get hit at all on a stage.
Thanks to Regina for the Info.
HELP NEEDED
HELP!!! What is the 'SPECIAL BONUS' you get at the end of each Mission? I have
not been able to get anything on this bonus. Do you get it when you uncover and
get EVERY single hidden secret & bonuses within that mission? Can anyone please
confirm what this elusive bonus is for?
HELP!!! Can anyone tell me the official names for the hidden symbols you get. I
know that some of them are from various Capcom games but which ones are which?
HELP!!! What is the maximum number of powerups you can get before your sword
maxes out?
Ok, now on with the guide!
-----------------------------------------------------------
6. POINTS SYSTEM
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is a list of the score points for each different icon you will get:
***********************
8a. MISSION 01 SCENE 01
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND IN MISSION 01: SCENE 01 = 7
Cow
01.01.01
There is a gap in the ground (the first gap) just after the first propeller
based baddies and just before the road that slants downwards. Climb down to the
bottom of this gap and slash into the empty space in the middle.
Capcom Spaceman
01.01.02
Similar to bonus 01.01.01. There will be another gap in-between the road that
slants downwards and the road that slants upwards. Climb down from either end
of one of these roads (careful not to fall down!) and slash into the empty
space in the middle.
Red Star
01.01.03
On the road that goes upwards (it says '03' on it and its just before the first
mini-boss), stand exactly in the middle of the '03' that's painted on the road
and do a standing double-jump to the left while also continually slashing to
the left.
Barrel
01.01.04
In EXACTLY the same place as secret 01.01.04 just slash left while standing on
the '03'.
Barrel
01.01.05
Do the same thing as in secret 01.01.04 but instead, stand at the top of the
'03' (not at the top of the road) and slash left. You may need to do a single
standing left jump or do a standing slash left with the powerup to get this
one.
Son Son
01.01.06
After you destroy the first mini-boss (called 'Transport') but before the big
drop down, walk to the end of the road. You should see a broken girder above.
Do a standing double jump and slash the highest part of the girder.
Yellow star
01.01.07
After the girder section in secret 01.01.06, instead of doing the big jump down
to fight the second mini-boss 'Terrorist' go down the long wall instead and
climb all the way to the bottom and slash right.
NOTE - To go down long walls quickly rather than holding on and going down,
hold down on the pad then press the jump button. Hiryu will start to fall. When
you want to hold back onto the wall just press in the direction of the wall.
This is much quicker than having to climb all the way down and is useful for
the 'Time Bonus' and 'Ranking'.
***********************
8b. MISSION 01 SCENE 02
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND IN MISSION 01: SCENE 02 = 8
Capcom Spaceman
01.02.01
Go as far as the first red arrow that points upwards (you must do this or the
bonus won't appear). Then go all the way back to the beginning of the scene
again. You will see a brown box with the bonus inside.
Red Star
01.02.02
On the same screen as the first red arrow pointing upwards, you will see a huge
block sticking out of the ceiling. Climb onto it and go around to the top-left
hand corner of the block and slash left for the bonus.
Son Son
Barrel
Cow
Red Star
01.02.03
Believe it or not, this secret is the trickiest one I have come across in the
whole game so far (and its still only the first stage!). I have put these four
bonuses as one secret as you have to get each one quickly before they disappear
(yes disappear!). Also you cannot get one before getting the previous one. For
example, getting the cow before the Son Son.
Destroy the first mini-boss as quickly as possible (the secrets will appear
when you start fighting the mini-boss), after it is destroyed, the game will
show a short cut scene of the boss escaping by flying up a airshaft that leads
outside. In this cut-scene you will also see the Son Son bonus. It is this
airshaft that holds the four secrets. As soon as you regain control of your
character, you have to immediately start running and do a double-jump to the
right wall of the shaft and start to climb up. If you did this quickly without
making any mistakes, you will see the Son Son icon above. As soon as you get
this, do a left air dash to hang onto the left wall of the shaft. By doing so
you will also get the barrel bonus. Keep air dashing from wall to wall to get
all the remaining two bonuses before they disappear.
Bear in mind you have to do all the actions on the pad VERY quickly with no
mistakes to get all four secrets. If you obtain two or three out of the four
secrets and the rest aren't there, it is because you were not quick enough.
Remember, the key to getting the four secrets is to destroy that damn mini-boss
as quickly as you can so you'll have more time to get them.
TIP - In case you don't already know, to do the cool looking air dash, you have
to be climbing a wall (not the ceiling and also not moving up or down on the
wall). Hold left or right on the d-pad depending on which way you want to air
dash and press the jump button.
TIP - An easier way I found to get this secret is at the point when you need to
climb up the right shaft wall to get the first bonus (Son Son). Jump to the
right shaft wall as usual but instead of climbing up normally, hold right on
the d-pad and press the jump button rapidly until you get Son Son. Strider will
jump and climb quicker this way and it makes getting the other three bonuses
easier (because you get to them quicker before they disappear). However, only
do this for the first bonus (Son Son). Using this technique anymore on the
airshaft will result in you missing the other bonuses because you will go up
too much.
Cow
01.02.04
You will find this by climbing onto the left wall of the airshaft and then
climbing to the bottom down to the bottom of the same wall and then firing to
the right. Another way of describing this is that it's just below the barrel
bonus in secret 01.02.03.
Cow
01.02.05
This one is very easy. As soon as you come out of the airshaft you will see a
picture of a man on a big board. Climb the picture to the top and you will see
a barrel to your left. Double-jump and fire at the box to find yet another cow
bonus.
***********************
8c. MISSION 01 SCENE 03
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND IN MISSION 01: SCENE 03 = 6
Cow
01.03.01
At the start of the scene, go up the escalator (stairs). Once there, jump to
the next platform, which will have two arrows pointing up (although they
disappear after a few seconds). Do not go up to where they are pointing but
instead keep going right. At the end there are two grey metal boxes on the
right most side. Just northwest of the first box is the invisible bonus. You
will have to shoot in this area to uncover it. It would also help if you had
the power up and are hanging from the ceiling instead.
Red Star
01.03.02
Because you went up to the top to get secret 01.03.01, three more secrets have
appeared! Go underneath and hang on to the platform that had the two arrows
pointing up to the airshaft. You should see a box if you move right. Shoot it
for the bonus.
Capcom Spaceman
01.03.03
Keep continuing right, underneath the same platform as in secret 01.03.02. When
you reach the corner, fire at the box to get your reward.
Cow
01.03.04
At the start and bottom of the escalator, shoot the box that has mysteriously
appeared for the bonus.
NOTE - You cannot get the last three secrets described above until you at least
go onto the platform with the two red arrows pointing up or until you get the
bonus from 01.03.01 to make them appear.
Capcom Spaceman or LIFE +1
01.03.05
This bonus is at the bottom-left hand corner of the area with the floating
moving platforms. Down there you should see a box that has the bonus. This
secret can vary. (See Hints no 6)
Cow
01.03.06
Halfway up the area with the floating moving platforms, there are two ledges on
each side to stand on. One is at the furthest left and one is at the furthest
right. Go to the ledge on the right and shoot its side for the bonus. You have
to be either climbing the right hand side ledge to do this, or use the moving
platform that is nearby to stand on so you can shoot the side of the ledge.
***********************
8c. MISSION 01 SCENE 04
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND SO FAR IN MISSION 01: SCENE 04 = 1
Cow
01.04.01
You will get this bonus for defeating one of the women. Make sure you collect
it before the bonus moves out of range or before the scene ends. This is the
only bonus I have found on this scene. There could be others but this scene is
over very quick.
***********************
8c. MISSION 01 SCENE 05
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND SO FAR IN MISSION 01: SCENE 05 = 15!
Barrel
01.05.01
The first propeller-based baddie is carrying the bonus. Destroy it and the box
it's carrying for your reward.
Barrel
01.05.02
After destroying the first mini-boss 'Tiger Form' (not the second Tiger Form),
you will be standing on top of a brown steel girder section. Go all the way to
the left of this girder section without falling down and climb underneath the
top level of the brown steel girders and fire for the bonus to appear. Another
way to describe this is that there are three levels on the left-most side of
the girder section that you can stand on. The top, middle and bottom levels.
Fire in the middle level. Got that?
Red Star
01.05.03
When the second 'Tiger Form' mini-boss appears, DO NOT destroy him/it. Instead
go furthest right, as possible and you will come to the bridge that isn't yet
lowered. So what do you do? Climb up the bridge of course! Go all the way to
the top for your reward.
Barrel
01.05.04
Just before the bridge that gets lowered and just after the long climb up the
brown steel girders, there is a small place that is protected by two more steel
girders (one on the left and one on the right). Duck and fire at the bottom
left between the two steel girders for the bonus.
Son Son
01.05.05
Instead of jumping from the tip of the now lowered bridge, climb underneath it!
This can be tricky to do. You have to fall off from the edge (don't jump off).
As soon as you start falling, do a left jump to grab underneath the bridge.
Once underneath, start moving left. Near the start of the bridge fire around
for the bonus.
Capcom Spaceman
01.05.06
Continue moving right from secret 01.05.05 until you reach the furthest left
(so you should be at the very corner underneath the start of the bridge). Fire
here for the bonus.
Barrel
01.05.07
Double-jump at the end of the lowered bridge to grab hold of the metal girders.
Instead of going up like you should do, go down. Just before you reach the
southernmost point at the bottom of the screen, you should notice that the
metal bars that you are hanging from change to a more south-easterly direction
and go into the satellite. Fire at the point where the metal bars change to
this new direction to get the bonus.
Capcom Spaceman
01.05.08
Continue moving right from secret 01.05.07 (underneath the satellite) towards
the end corner where the satellite and wall meet up. Fire there for another
bonus.
Red Star
01.05.09
When you have defeated the next mini-boss called 'Solo' for the first time,
there will be a red arrow that's pointing southeast. The arrow is at the top
section of the metal bars that point southeast and lead into the satellite and
it will only appear after destroying the mini-boss. Fire just above this arrow
to get the bonus. NOTE - The arrow will disappear after a short time.
Son Son
01.05.10
Not a secret as such but still a score bonus. When you are walking down into
the satellite, there will be a box at the bottom. Shoot the box for the bonus.
Cow
01.05.11
After climbing up the satellite dish, don't jump from the top, but fall or
climb down to go behind it. Once at the bottom, you should notice that the dish
to big frame that holds and supports it. This makes up the first
corner/crevice. Go right a bit further from here to drop down a bit more. This
is the second corner/crevice of the dish. Duck and fire left into the second
corner/crevice for the bonus. If this sounds confusing, basically it's behind
the satellite but before the drop down which leads to the baddie with the box
that has LIFE +1.
Red Star
01.05.12
When you are fighting 'Solo' at the end of the scene, there will be gap just
before the powerup on the right-hand side of the area. Climb down the left wall
to go into the gap. When you are halfway down the wall, fire right the bonus.
Life MAX +1
01.05.13
Do the same thing as in secret 01.05.12 but instead of climbing down the
left-hand side wall, climb down the right-hand side wall of the gap.
Alternatively you can air-dash from the left-hand side wall. This time climb
down to the very bottom rather than the middle and fire left from there for the
bonus.
Capcom Spaceman
01.05.14
By the powerup when fighting 'Solo', climb up the building you see to the right
of the powerup. At the very top you will see your bonus.
Red Star
01.05.15
Near the top of the same building as in secret 01.05.14, do a standing
double-jump to the left while rapidly firing for the bonus. NOTE - Do this from
the highest point of the building that Strider can stand. So this doesn't mean
at the very top but almost at the top.
***********************
8c. MISSION 01 SCENE 06
***********************
TOTAL BONUS SECRETS FOUND SO FAR IN MISSION 01: SCENE 06 = 03
Cow
01.05.01
At the very beginning of the battle, you will see a bright white looking
building in the background (its the brightest out of the lot). Use this
building as guidance to shoot in the area where it covers the screen. You may
have to jump while firing rapidly to get the bonus. As always, if you have the
powerup, it is much easier to find.
Capcom Spaceman
01.05.02
The Emperor Dragon has a pattern in the way he moves around the area you fight
him. Basically he keeps doing a anti-clockwise circle that starts at the seven
o'clock mark (bottom-left hand corner). The way he moves is pretty crooked but
its still more or less a circular pattern. You may have to analyse his pattern
the first time he makes the circle to understand the secrets. When he reaches
the nine o'clock mark (when he has nearly finished the circle) fire around him
for the bonus. It takes him about a minute and a half to do a full circle (to
go back to the seven o' clock mark) so keep that in mind. Sorry but I could
find no other way to explain this one. The place you fight is very open. If you
can find a better explanation you would be acknowledged.
Red Star
01.05.03
This is around the seven-thirty mark. Fire around for the bonus. (See secret
01.05.02 for details).
