Brian Lara cricket was winner of the playstation game of the year as
it was the first cricket game available. Still,it's remarkably close
to the real thing.
Brian Lara is a simulation that involves a hell of a lot of strategy.
The computer opponents are extremely hard to dismiss, but there are
ways.They take time though.
Controls: Batting: The d-pad is used to determine which shot you will
play.If you push down on the d-pad,you will play a straight drive. If
you push right, you will play a pull shot.More on that later.
Note:All information is relevant for a right handed batsman or right
handed bowler.
If you play a shot using the x button, the ball will probably travel
along the ground. If you push O while batting, you will play a lofted
stroke. If you push Square, you will block the ball.
Please note:When blocking or playing a stroke to a fast or medium
fast bowler, make sure you press the button as soon as the ball leaves
the bowlers hand.Make sure you do this when the ball is pitched up
and on the stumps, otherwise you will be bowled.
Try not to hit sixes in the first 4 overs as you will probably
mistime the shot and get caught. Start off playing straight and ONLY
hit along the ground. You must allow your batters to get their eye
in.Like is said, this game is remarkably close to the real thing.
BOWLING: Bowling is the hardest task in this game. The computer
opponents are extremely hard to dismiss but it is possible.
You need to out think them.It may sound silly but it's true.
Controls:
Fast bowler: A fast bowler is good to open with. He may not have a
huge number of deliveries, but his pace more than makes up for this.
To bowl a normal pace delivery, press the X button.
To bowl a faster delivery, press the TRIANGLE button.
For a slower ball, press either the SQUARE or CIRCLE buttons.
Tap the TRIANGLE button for some extra speed.
Leg Spin Bowler: For a leg spin bowler, the controls are just as
simple. Press the X button to bowl a leg break. Press the O button to
bowl a googly and press the SQUARE button for a flipper.
Swing Bowler: These are the best bowlers in the game by far as they
can swing the ball both ways which is very confusing, especially if
you are playing a friend(or enemy).
Press the O button for an in swinger.
Press the X button for an out swinger.
Press the SQUARE button for a straight ball.
Tap the triangle for some extra speed.
Off Spinner:Press the X button for an off break.
The O button for an arm ball and press the square button for an off
break.
BOWLING STRATEGIES:
There are a number of strategies in this game and they will help you
defeat your opponents. They don't always work though,so be patient.
Fast Bowler strategies:
Strategy 1: First, set your field so that most players are located on
the off side.Continue bowling on the off side and try to get the
batsman to play the cut shot.Chances are he will spoon one up to one
of your fielders.
Strategy 2: Put your fielders on the leg side boundary and continue
to bowl outside the leg stump.A few runs will be conceded but the
wicket will come,eventually.
Swing Bowler strategies:
Strategy 1: Set your field so that you have a lot of slips and off
side fielders. Bowl outswingers to the right handed batsman and in
swingers to the left.
Pitch the ball at a good length(not to short, not to full) and hope
for the best. You are aiming to get an edge to slips or the keeper.
Also, try bowling in swinging yorkers. If they work, they are brilliant.
Leg Spinner strategies:
Strategy 1:
Set a field with close in fielders. You MUST have a slips fieldsman.
Continue to bowl leg breaks just short of a good length.Hopefully the
batsman will play a late cut straight to your keeper or slips
fielder.
Strategy 2: Set a field with close in fielders and bowl yorkers every
time.Use the flipper a lot. Hopefully the batsman will mistime a shot
straight to your fielders.
Strategy 3:Bowl extremely short googly's.Make sure you have set a
defensive field to accomodate for the big shots the batsman will
play.Hopefully, the man on the boundary will have a mistimed shot
spooned up to him.
Off Spinner strategies.
Strategy 1:
Set an off side field and bowl into the right handed batsman using
off breaks.Bowl at a good length and spin the ball into him. He may
mistime a shot to your mid off fielder or the fielder at point.
That is it for the bowling strategies.
Remember, keep trying. If it becomes too frustrating, press start whilst
playing and you will come to an option screen.Scroll down until you
reach "generate innings".If selected, this will randomly generate the
opponents innings, giving you a score to chase. The computer does it
randomly.Sometimes the other team will make 300 runs and other times
they will only make 100 runs.I often do this as I believe bowling 50
overs is extremely tiresome.
BATTING STRATEGIES:
Strategy 1: Like I said before, allow your batsman to get their eye
in.Play along the ground and straight in the first 5-10 overs. This
may sound like crap, but it is a necessity when trying to make huge
scores.
Strategy 2: If the ball is clearly going to be a bouncer, make sure
you get inside of it. Move over to the off stump and hold up and
right. As soon as the ball leaves the bowler's hand, push the button.
More often than not, this will result in a cracking shot into row N of
the southern stand. Cool eh?
Remember, bat sensibly.Don't get carried away. Keep your head down.
Don't try and hit every ball for 6.Place the ball through the field.
These little hints will help you get humungous scores.Trust me.
THE DIFFERENT STROKES:
There are wide range of strokes that you can play, you just need to
know how to play them.Below is a list of every stroke possible to
play and how to play them. Enjoy!
Note:All strokes are played from the default camera angle. If you
choose the reverse camera angle, the directions will be the opposite
of what they are now.
Straight drive:To play a straight drive,hold "down" and press x.For a
lofted stroke,press circle.
On drive:To play an on drive, hold down-right and press x or circle.
Off drive: Hold down and left to play an off drive.A cover drive is
basically the same shot in this title.
Cut shot: Hold right and press the aqquired button. If you push the
button earlier, you may play a cover drive.Push it later and you will
play a later cut.
Late cut:Hold up and left to play a late cut.Never play this stroke
when slips are in place.
Leg glance: To play a leg glance, hold up and right. This may also
result in a sweep shot.
Pull shot:Hold right and press the aqquired button. This shot works
best with the faster bowlers.
Hook shot:The same controls as the pull shot. This shot only works on
a bouncer.
Forward defence:Push triangle whilst holding up.
Back defence:Depending on where the ball is pitched, the same controls
as the forward defence apply.
That is probably every shot in the game. There are a few "special
ones" in there but i'll let you discover them for yourself.
RUNNING BETWEEN THE WICKETS:
Running between the wickets can be confusing at first.I remember when
I first purchased the game.I kept pushing x after I had the ball and
I got run out about 7 times a game.Personally,i believe that the x
button should not have been used to make your batsman run.Another
button should have been used.
Press X to run
O to go back.
Only run if you no the ball has gone past the fielder. The camera
doesn't always allow you to see if the ball has beaten the fielder,so
be patient.
Oh yeah, you can't simply turn back and run the other way.Once you
are half way through a run your batsman is committed and won't turn
back.
If you know there is more than one run possible, press x before you
reach the crease. This will allow you to make a sharper turn. You will
shave seconds of your running time. This is extremely helpful when
chasing a big total.
