Zork: The Undiscovered Underground is a fun freeware game that is a prequel to
Zork Grand Inquisitor. It uses the same format as the first three Zork games:
No graphics at all, and a text-based interface where commands must be typed in
order to make progress through the game. The plot is simply to explore a
recently discovered area of the Underground Empire, and also to escape it after
the entrance crumbles behind the character. The difficulty is average and the
length of the game is extremely short, but the descriptions are so well written
and interesting to read that the game is definitely worth a play.
The game starts at the new excavation. Northeast. Northeast. South. South to
the Mud Forum. "Get tinsel". North. North. East. East. East to backstage. "Open
trunk". "Get coin". West. West. West. North. Northwest to the souvenire stand.
"Talk to salesman". "Get mask". "Get baby rune". "Get forever gores". "Get
multi-implementeers". "Get ZM$100000". North to the changing room. "Get razor
gloves". "Get fish mask". "Get glowing suit". The lantern should switch out
around this point, so "hit lantern" to turn it back on.
Make sure to hit the lantern whenever it switches off in the game. South.
Southeast to convention center lobby. "Drop lantern". "Wear gloves". "Wear
mask". "Wear suit". North to the convention hall. "Get glasses". South. "Get
lantern". South. East. East to the stage. "Get blue lens". "Get red lens".
West. West. South. East to the museum of illusion. "Tie tinsel to coin". "Put
coin in slot". "Get coin". "Put coin in slot". Remember the number of the rib
that Mike mentions. West. West to the museum of adventure. "Pry (the number
mentioned by Mike) rib with sword". Southwest to the janitor's closet.
"Get aerosol can". Northeast. East. North to the cultural complex. "Drop baby
rune". South. "Drop forever gores". South to the mud forum. "Put blue lens in
glasses". "Put red lens in glasses". "Wear glasses". "Drop all". "Open cover".
"Press button". "Get aerosol can". "Get balloon". "Get flathead". "Get house".
"Get lantern". "Get tree". "Get ZM$100000". "Put flathead on circle". "Put tree
on square". "Put house on triangle". "Put balloon on pentagon" to open the door
in the mud forum. Southeast to the cage. "Drop ZM$100000" and the rat-ants will
start to follow. Northwest. North. North. West. Southwest to complete the game.
AEROSOL CAN
Found in the janitor's closet. It is automatically used against the ant after
escaping the cave at the end of the game.
BABY RUNE
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. It is dropped in the
cultural complex.
BLUE LENS
Found on the stage, the blue lens can only be picked while wearing gloves. It
is put in the glasses.
BRASS LANTERN
Available at the start of the game. It is used to provide light throughout
the adventure, but will occasionally turn off. When this happens, just hit
the lantern to turn it back on.
CHEAPLY-MADE SWORD
Available at the start of the game. It is used to provide the rib mentioned
by Mick in the museum of adventure.
CHEWED-UP SHOES
Found in the convention hall. They are not used.
FISH-MOUTHED MASK
Found in the changing room. It is worn as part of the grue costume.
FLATHEAD
Found in the mud forum. It is put on the circle.
FOREVER GORES
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. They are dropped in
the hall of science lobby.
GLASSES
Found in the convention hall. The blue and red lenses are put in the glasses,
and the glasses are then worn to view the 3D scene from the display unit in
the mud forum.
GLOWING/FUR-COVERED BODY SUIT
Found in the changing room. It is worn as part of the grue costume. They are
also used to get the blue lens and red lens from the stage.
HAT
Found in the convention hall. It is not used.
HOT-AIR BALLOON
Found in the mud forum. It is put on the pentagon.
HOUSE
Found in the mud forum. It is put on the triangle.
MULTI-IMPLEMENTEERS
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. It is dropped in the
mud forum.
POPCORN
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. It is not used.
POSTCARDS
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. They are not used.
QUINT-ZORKMID COIN
Found in the chest at the backstage area. It is tied to the tinsel.
QUINT-ZORKMID COIN, TIED TO TINSEL
Made by tying the quint-zorkmid coin to the tinsel. It is used in the slot of
the machine in the museum of illusion. It is then picked up and used again on
the slot of the machine to make Mick tell the location of the correct rib.
RAFT
Found in the mud forum. It is not used.
RAZOR-LIKE GLOVES
Found in the changing room. It is worn as part of the grue costume. They are
also used to get the blue lens and red lens from the stage.
RED LENS
Found on the stage, the red lens can only be picked while wearing gloves. It
is put in the glasses.
TINSEL
Found on the tree in the mud forum. It is tied to the quint-zorkmid coin.
TREE
Found in the mud forum. It is put on the square.
ZM$100000
Found at the souvenir stand after the salesman has left. It is dropped in the
cage.
