02 - HOW TO USE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To find a Texture and what it means, press Ctrl+F,
then type the file name of the texture you have chosen from the Textures
folder.
Make sure you type the EXACT file name, e.g. 'air_bomber_12t.sst' we have no
idea which bomber it is.
But the help tells us that air_bomber_12t.sst is enabled in digital age.
And it's real name of air_bomber_12t.sst is B-122 Wyvern Bomber.
When you have found the file, check if it is in any specified section.
If you can't find the file you are looking for, remove the end code like
numbers.
I recommend using Microsoft Notepad to view this document.
But you can also use WordPad and Microsoft Word.
If your using Windows 95/98 then you will be forced to view this document in
WordPad.
This is due to a difference in a file sizes, Win 95/98 dislikes very large .txt
files, and prefers them to be in WordPad.
Make sure your font is set to 'Courier New' 'Regular' '10'.
Format>Font
If you restore down this window, make sure word wrap is enabled.
Format>Word Wrap
To see what’s new in each version use the VERSION HISTORY section at 03.
This language is based on ENGLISH - UNITED KINGDOM, so don't email me mistakes
like colour is spelt as color. ;)
Here is a list of programs that you can use to mod with:
Paint Shop Pro (£??/$??)
Adobe Photo Shop 7 (£700/$600)
Adobe Photo Shop Elements (£40/$50)
Corel Draw 11 (£600/$700)
IrfanView FREE to download.
+Email me if you know any more & make sure they are compatible with .TGA files.
Some of these programs can be downloaded off file sharing software.
1.How can I change the in-game skins of each epoch?
Quite simply:
statusbar_xxxxxxxxxxxxxx_XX.sst
These can be fun to edit; they are the status bars in-game.
You know, where your resources are displayed!
(BACKGROUND)
ingamebackground_0Xx.sst
These can be fun to edit; these are the epoch’s skin for each age.
It's the in-game skin, which changes every time you epoch up.
If the end of the file is 'a' or 'b', a is the main skin file.
Files that end in 'b' are just another part of the skin.
(BACKGROUND)
2.How can I edit a texture like smooth stone, like adding a picture to it?
Lets choose an example from the '08 - GROUND/TERRAIN REFERENCE' section.
In that section there is a file called 'asphalt_1_X.sst [MT]'.
Here is the full list of the 'asphalt' files:
asphalt_1_1.sst
asphalt_1_2.sst
asphalt_1_3.sst
asphalt_1_4.sst
The texture is split into 4 parts, here is a picture to explain it:
________ ________
|########|########|
|########|########|
|## 1 ###|## 2 ###|
|________|________|
|########|########|
|## 3 ###|## 4 ###|
|########|########|
|________|________|
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
KEY:
# = Texture
|,_ = Invisible line which splits up the texture.
1 = asphalt_1_1.sst
2 = asphalt_1_2.sst
3 = asphalt_1_3.sst
4 = asphalt_1_4.sst
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
So editing a texture is no easy task.
It's almost like drawing your own 4 piece jigsaw pieces separately.
You can either shrink your texture so it fits into a 1/4 of the texture which
is 128x128 pixels.
OR
Blow it up, so it's 512x512 pixels big, making it bigger makes it more blurry,
so this technique is worse.
3. How could I make the colour of the water red or green?
EASY! Navigate to the "Textures" folder, go to the file named:
waterpalette.tga
Change the Hue of that to your desired colour!
4. How can I make really cool realistic looking textures?
STEAL EM! (legally) :p
-Extract textures/patterns from ready installed programs like:
Paint Shop Pro
Adobe Photo Shop
Corel Draw
+Any others you have! (Not paint!) ;-)
The patterns/textures are usually found in the programs system files, e.g.:
C:/Program Files/Company/Paint Program/Textures/Bubbles.bmp
Tip: press Prt Sc/ Print Screen key, then paste in paint!
-Search the web for them! (E.g. put in google; free textures.)
5. Can I print this guide, email it to my friends, upload it to my website?
See 12 - COPYRIGHT.
6. You know all them shades of colours in Scenario editor when you’re choosing
your terrain? YES! How do you change them?
In the TGA folder there is a file called 'colorpallete.tga'
you can find more out about this special file by visiting the 05 - TGA FILES
section.
7. MORE FAQS COMING SOON, IF YOU EMAIL ME THEM!
oblivion_ee@hotmail.com
These images are NEARLY all cursors!
I don't recommend changing the cursors, because it will put you off playing the
game.
The only files here that are worth editing are 'colorpallete.tga' &
'waterpallete.tga'.
attack ground pointer.tga
The sword cursor, which enables the player to attack ground.
attack pointer.tga
The sword cursor, which enables you to attack an enemy.
Meaning, board a transport cursor.
build pointer.tga
This is the black hammer with a wooden handle, meaning where to build the
specified building.
calamity pointer.tga
When you choose a calamity, your icon changes to a lightning bolt cursor.
colorpallete.tga
EDIT THIS, EDIT THIS!! :-D
This is a very exciting file to modify.
When you select grass, or any other texture, you get a list of shading on the
right hand scroll bar.
In this file you can change them to what ever you want!!
When editing you MUST zoom RIGHT up to modify it correctly.
convert pointer.tga
These are the 2 hands together in a praying like position.
This cursor is used to say which unit/building to convert.
flare pointer.tga
This is the shooting star like cursor used to select an area to flare your
allies.
garrison pointer.tga
A cursor to point where to garrison.
Identical to 'board transport pointer.tga'
gather pointer.tga
This is a shovel and basket pointer, this shows when your cursor is placed over
a gather point.
heal.tga
To hands in a pray like position, identical to 'convert pointer.tga'.
Shown when a healer unit is selected and your cursor is placed over one of your
wounded units.
healing pointer.tga
A red circle with a white healing cross inside it, with a small white cursor to
the top left.
invalid healing pointer.tga
A BIG red cross that shows when you are not allowed to heal a unit/building.
Identical to 'invalid calamity pointer.tga' & 'invalid heal.tga'.
invalid target pointer.tga
A BIG red cross, just like all the other invalidxXxXxXx.tga
leave transport pointer.tga
This is the hand pointing to the top left.
It appears when you are selecting the drop off point of a transport.
no los pointer.tga
An eye looking right, with a red cross partly over it.
no los.tga
Exactly the same as 'no los pointer.tga' (above).
normal pointer.tga
The normal yellow arrow which is the default & most used cursor.
patrol pointer.tga
A white arrow with PA next to it, email me if you have more info on this.
plus pointer.tga
A plus cursor with a rock like texture to it.
protected calamity pointer.tga
A lightning bolt placed on a shield meaning a calamity can't me performed in
this area.
protected conversion pointer.tga
2 hands placed on a shield meaning you can't convert units in this area.
rally point pointer.tga
The flag that appears when you are looking for an area to place a rally point.
target to close pointer.tga
A bow and arrow target made from wood and a red inside.
This shows up if a target is too close, usually occurs using siege like units.
target too close pointer.tga
Same as above...
volcano.tga
A black and grey blurry cursor, I have NO idea where/when this shows in the
game.
If you know what this means, EMAIL ME!
waterpalette.tga
The colour of the water, in theory if you change this to green, you will get
green water.
If my theory works, EMAIL ME!
