This FAQ is written for the ORIGINAL Win Lose or Draw by Hi-Tech Expressions.
This game was released on many systems including but not limited to the Apple
II, DOS, and Commodore 64. This FAQ is *not* written for the release of the
sequel on any of these systems or subsequently the NES or other consoles.
Although those games have the same title, they are slightly different and
include different puzzles and different graphics.

I wrote this FAQ because I was fascinated with the quirks of getting right
answers when you typed it in wrong. Sometimes
it would take it, sometimes it would not. My friends and I used to play this
game and be utterly frustrated at the
inability to identify certain key phrases in the speed round. It does not
tell you the answers. I will.

PLEASE NOTE that there is a drawing in the final speed round that is
*impossible* to get (if your spelling is any good,
anyway). The drawing is of a "chalice", or a type of goblet or cup.
Unfortunately, the game creators somehow mixed this
up with a "challis" (a bolt of cloth). Therefore, unless you were to type
an "S" instead of a "C", you could never guess
this answer right. Let alone the thousands of other possible answers that
could mislead you like "goblet", "cup", "grail",
etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. How to play the game
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Duh. It's Win, Lose or Draw. Everyone knows how to play this game. Your dog
knows how to play this game.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.A. How a "correct" answer is judged
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The game reads in a string of letters to compare the typed answer with. It
checks to see that the answer contains the "correct" answer letters, in the
proper order, and if they are, a correct mark is received.

- HOWEVER -
The game does NOT concern itself with the garbage in between these letters.
This is why sometimes you can get away with having a slightly incorrect answer,
or sometimes in the speed round, you can type garbage and get a correct answer.

FOR EXAMPLE: For the puzzle: "DON'T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH",
the game only checks for the sequence of letters: "DNTLOKGFTHRS".

This means that while typing the correct answer,

"DON'T LOOK A GIFT HORSE IN THE MOUTH",

will give you a "correct" mark, you can also type

"DNTLOKGFTHRS".

You could also type

"Do NoT LOve Khan, because kirk's Great FooT HandleR Says so."

(capital letters emphasizing what is needed for a correct answer).
As long as the letters are THERE, and in order, nothing else matters.

2. Solutions
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2.A. Organization explanation
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--NOTE--
The "stop drawing" variable is a reference to the words that follow it in the
chart below. There is a character for each of the words that will be displayed
on the right hand side of the screen if it is correctly guessed. Therefore,
if there are four possible words to be displayed, there will be four "stop
drawing" characters like "YNNN", etc. If a referenced word is correctly guessed,
AND the corresponding "stop drawing" character (ie- the first word goes with the
first letter of the group) is a "Y", it will stop drawing that particular
picture and move on to the next word in the sequence.

FOR EXAMPLE: BLOWING HOT AND COLD BLWHTCLD Y Y N BLOW HOT COLD
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
| | | | | |
------------------- | |
| | | |
| ---------------------
| |
--------------------

If "BLOW" is correctly guessed, it will appear as text in the upper right
hand corner, and it will stop drawing the face blowing wind for "BLOW".
This is because it's referenced "stop drawing" variable is "Y". "HOT" will
do the same, because it is also "Y". "COLD" will not stop drawing because
it's associated "stop drawing variable" is "N". It will appear as a word in
text in the upper right hand corner, but it will NOT stop drawing.

I know it's a complicated system for something stupid. It also wastes a lot of
space in the programming code. They could have chosen to default every letter
to "N" and have special cases be "Y", since there are so few. But hell, I didn't
write it.

The solutions are organized as follows:

***COPIED FROM ABOVE***
PLEASE NOTE that there is a drawing in the final speed round that is
*impossible* to get (if your spelling is any good, anyway). The drawing is of a
"chalice", or a type of goblet or cup. Unfortunately, the game creators somehow
mixed this up with a "challis" (a bolt of cloth). Therefore, unless you were to
type an "S" instead of a "C", you could never guess this answer right. Let alone
the thousands of other possible answers that could mislead you like "goblet",
"cup", "grail", etc.
