Written by James "MuleAthon" Martin
Started on 6th March 2005
This guide is for Football Manager 2005 and Worldwide Soccer Manager 2005.
Please note that data updates and super leagues may mean that some of this
data is incorrect. Please don't bother telling me that.
This Guide may only be hosted on GameFAQs.com, unless I am directly approached
by another site and approve that site accordingly.
I can't do ASCII Art. At all. Email me (at the bottom) if you have any.
DON'T EMAIL ME TELLING ME THIS ISN'T FINISHED. I KNOW. IT'S GETTING DONE.
Mattias "UnHoLyAnGeL" Holmström deserves as much credit as anyone in the making
of this FAQ. Praise him.

M 3. Frequently Asked Questions [FM009] !
FMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFMFM!
Q: Patch?
A: Go to www.thedugout.net and download the patch (might not be friendly for
56kers). If it's zipped/compressed, extract it. Then, run the executable. Let
it run. Don't cancel it. When it says "Update Complete", start a new game, and
the game will be fully updated. Simple as. Make sure that you complete all of
your patching before commencing a new game. Otherwise some data updates and
engine changes wont take effect. The latest patch (and final, so far as i know)
takes the game version to 5.03. MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE APPROPRIATE
VERSION! If you have 56k, the data update isn't a good idea, and if you have
a MAC, get the MAC version!!!
Q: Editor? Add Player?
A: First things first, PLEASE make sure that you have AT LEAST 256MB RAM before
you attempt anything with the FM Data Editor. I personally would recommend only
using the editor if you have 512MB RAM, simple because it makes things much
easier and faster. If you don't, it's likely that you'll suffer terribly with
INSANE processing and loading times (like 45 mins for the initial load etc).
Next, backup your "db" folder, defaults to
C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2005/data/db
Make sure that it's backed up. Then make double sure.
Then load up the editor and select "Load". Load up the first file that's
selected. This is your database. Wait for it to finish, and then you're
free to ruin your game in whatever way you wish to. To add anyone you fancy,
go to players, click edit and then "Add Player". Fill in the details as you
like.
If you're desperate to 'cheat'(read-"update"), but have NO ram, or like 200MB,
and can't run the editor, check out www.mindcompression.com for MCFM 2005, an
in-game editor. If that doesn't work, i.e. "Runtime Environment" not installed,
then I'd say that you were screwed. Sorry!
Q: Downloads?
A: Always check www.sigames.com FIRST for any official updates. Secondly, try
www.thedugout.net for everything. www.sortitoutsi.net should be your next
port of call, with www.fmfaq.com also available. REMEMBER: If in doubt,
GOOGLE!
Q: "My skin and balls aren't working, can you help?"
A: My friend phoned me and asked me precisely that question. I laughed for days
but the solution is simple. When you download a skin and or ball, there will
(usually) be a .zip containing all of the data. The simplest solution is to
extract the data, KEEPING THE DATA TOGETHER, to the following locations:
*drive*\Sport Interactive\FM2005\data\graphics\pitch(for the balls, nets etc)
and
*drive*\Sport Interactive\FM2005\data\skins (for skins, duh!). For skins, ensure
that the ENTIRE package is kept in one folder under the name of the skin
otherwise this wont work.
If you are missing one or more buttons, the skin has not been completely
installed, and you should delete the folder containing it and re-extract it.
Q: How do I add a player's, manager's, or my own face to the game?
A: http://www.abela-wadge.com/fmstuff/tutorial
NB for this you HAVE to put each individual face in a new directory (this will
become clear if you read the faq) and have an individual config.xml file for
it to work. multiple pics in one file isn't possible (just yet).
(credit goes to philipmufc for this contribution)
Q: How do i play in windowed mode?
A: Right click on the icon for FM2005 and click properties.
Untick the full screen box and click apply. Next time you run FM it should
be in a windowed mode. NB you must have a resolution GREATER than
1024x768 for this to work.
Q: Debug Mode?
A: Debug mode is a special "hack" on the original game that simply unlocks a
few more features for the player to enjoy. IT CAUSES NO DAMAGE TO THE GAME.
All that need be done id find the file "init.cfg" in the FM directory. Next,
open it in Notepad, or similar, and type in it ""DEBUG_MODE"" and saving
the file. This will add a TON of new options and things that weren't meant
for the released version. Enjoy :P. MAY ONLY WORK ON UNPATCHED VERSIONS.
Q: network Game?
A: First, ensure that all of your prospective players have the same
version of the game (on the introduction screen at the top). Next decide on a
host, who has lots of RAM. Make him turn off his firewall, and get his ip
address from www.whatismyip.com. All other players select "Join other server"
from the network menu in FM. Put the host's ip address in (including dots)
and join. Begin playing!
NB: I'd suggest no more than about 5 players per game, or at an absolute
MAXIMUM eight. The game will become very slow otherwise. Secondly, I'd also
recommend putting a password on your manager, just in case you either don't
trust the people you're playing with, or if you just want security.

Big thanks to SI Games for being the best. At everything.
Big thanks to Mattias "UnHoLyAnGeL" Holmström, who helped me with getting all
those stats.
Thanks go to everyone who contributed and bumped my message board topics to a
total of over 140 posts, and everyone who posted generally.
philipmufc for telling me the ASC-II art site, though I haven't used it yet.
Everyone I've played with online.
David O'Leary for being superb, and Mellberg for being AWESOME.
That's it. You've finished. I'll leave you with my favourite lyric, from the
song "Seventy Times 7" by Brand New (and "There's No "I" in Team" by Taking
Back Sunday):
"Is that what you call "tact"? You're as subtle as a brick in the small of the
back. And I've seen more spine in a jellyfish, and even more guts in eleven
year old kids."
